Walking the TALK
Well, the stories all seem to be true, there sure was a heck of a lot of people out on the main street today, walking peacefully as they should.
Pesi Fonua's Matangi Tonga has a good summary of the issue on his site, but it was amazing to see so many people decide to make themselves be aligned with such a non religious (?) issue. http://www.matangitonga.to/home/twili.htm
Estimates from those around i asked definitely said that a central road jammed with people from the Basilica to the Post Office is definitely somewhere in the vicinity of 6,000 ~ 10,000 (if you take 800 girls from QSC would probably take up the space between the Basilica and the end of the Tungi Arcade.) And they made the turn while there were still people pouring out of the Basilica complex (didn't know so many could fit in there.)
I think its a good thing for Tonga, and for what the Kings have done (King George I, Salote Tupou III, and Tupou IV) in educating, enlightening the people that they now want to peacably make a statement about how they would prefer their government direction. Of course it is a different issue altogether whether they all know why they're marching, or why they're not marching.
Rumour boy came walking in here a couple of hours ago to say that Government workers were informed they were not to attend the rally. Take that into consideration and that means a fair more number of people may have turned out. Same boy said that Tonga High School prefects were out taking down names of students from that school who were marching (my years at Tonga High School leads me to believe that is not so surprising)
Not so strange with such an emotive topic as the changes to a constitution, there are strong views by both sides and very personal (as in directed to a person) views on the issue that clouds the thinking on both sides.
This issue is building up to be a turning point in Tonga, one of those great moments in history that initiates and defines a people. May we be better from it.
