Tonfon up and running

Telecommunications

Hmmm,

Doesn't seem to be any information out on the Internet as yet (as I write) about Tonfon's introduction of Telepony Services in Tonga.

So, here in short is what we have learned from the 'opening' service and garnered from the Internet.

Tonfon will provide local/international telephony at an as yet to be annouced 'cheaper' price for all the Tonga islands, beginning with the three major island groups (Tongatapu, Ha'apai, and Vava'u.) This service will also include Internet/Data and Video.

The claim to fame will be that all the Tonfon services will be based on IP (Internet Protocol) and is using some leading technologies in this area.

a) IP Wireless services by Telos Technology (www.telostechnology.com)
b) Satellite Services by GlobeComm Systems (www.globecommsystems.com)

The key feature for international phone calls is that with the VoIP, Tonfon runs its International calls out of LA/USA (essentially meaning that Tonga no longer has to worry about Tariffs.) The advantage of going out of the USA not only includes the cheaper rates available out of the USA, but also getting access to the Internet backbone and shipping Voice through IP to other countries.

I'm waiting for a phone so I can whack it into my computer, hey I'd like the phone just to be able to afford a phone call out of this country.

later,

Sam T.
