Cyclone Amy passes Town

2003-01-15 Wednesday 12:00 Mid-day.

Cyclone Amy just passed through and all indications are things came through rather well for our little country.

The cyclone did not turn as originally expected and did not come as close to Tongatapu to cause the expected damage.

A few electric lines went down, but fortunately Shoreline (the electricity people) had the foresight (common-sense?) to fight with people along the lines to cut down many of the trees that overhanged electrical wires.
The Disaster Relief people had a program on television last-night, just hours before the storm blew by, by which time most people had taken what precautions they could. The neighbourhoods were boarded up with plywood, corrugated-iron roofing materials and boats were tied every which way to the wharfs, while the boats that could be brought onshore were already dry-docked.

Winds were quite strong Tuesday afternoon and expectations were for gale force winds to the Ha'apai Group as well as Tongatapu/'Eua. Before night the expected gale force winds for the Ha'apai group was recanted and the Tongatapu/'Eua group were the only ones still on high alert.

By 10:00 pm the heavy winds were blowing through Tongatapu which soon petered off.

All-in-all, the clean up work is in progress but most business' and government departments are fully operational. Unlike 1996 when most places closed for two days as the clean-up operations were extensive.

YES - The 'Olovaha is over at Popua hanging around on the reef. There also seems to be a smaller boat (possibly one of 'Uliti Uata's boats - no confirmation there) capsized beside the 'Olovaha. It is funny, since the road is the one everyone takes to the dump to spill their clean up, so watching the floundering boats is kind of a past-time at the moment.

Some of the more adventurous boys are actually out on the reef "tuli hopo" diving from the capsized boat. My wife thought the stunt was reckless/dangerous and I said that given a few less years I'd probably be out there with the boys, "just for the fun of it."

News on Television last-night indicated that the National Disaster Relief committee's preliminary findings indicate no need for declaring a National Emergency.

Although reports from various sectors were not complete, due to power problems for many offices, verbal reviews implies that each sector should be able to cater for their own damages without the need to declare a National Emergency
