Tonfon - real teething problems

Well the Cindarella story isn't sweet, and it is taking a little while to see whether it will come true.

Tonfon not only opened with great promises, they also shovelled out the lowest prices ever seen in this country.

Free local calls (TOP$30.00 a month phone rental) and TOP$0.20 per minute mobile calls was further sweetened with a flat TOP$1.00 (approx. USD$0.50) per minute international rates for anywhere in the world.
Add to this, they were basically giving away the Nokia 5110. They charged TOP$100 for the phone, but were giving you TOP$100 of call time, but it sounds better to say they are paying for the phone (?)

Well, they also promoted a one day anywhere for FREE. Which only shovelled out a whole lot of congestion on their network, which means I didn't get home for lunch (?)

Anyhow, the congestion will hopefully have given engineers a good run on their Tower testing. I noticed that my phone was losing the tower signal a lot during the free promotional time. The phone was actually great the 1st day I got it.

TCC obviously doesn't need to respond? but we hope we get competition.

Well, August 20th and its been a week since we had two of Tonfon's mobiles at the house.

I take one, and my wife has the other so she can get in touch with me when the Baby needs her diaper change (something like that anyway.)

Anyhow, I think the service is great for what I've used it for. Of course, I just remembered why I never got into this mobile technology in the first place (too much immediacy.) Of course, I subsequently found the 'discreet' mode of the phone so I don't get so disturbed when I'm actually busy with other people.

Tonfon suffered a deluge of new subscribers which it frankly didn't deal with very well (on the tower connection side.) Some of the problems seem to also indicate that they've been having problems configuring a new tower they've put in the middle of town (on top of the Pacific Royale Hotel.) This is unfortunate, because before they did their testing/shifting I was getting great reception all day. At least to this part of the week's test they seem to have resolved that configuration problem.

I love the coverage, we've been to Tatakamotonga three times this week and been able to make calls from there that were crystal clear. We haven't had recourse to drive to the other side of the island, but we'll be testing it too. (Tatakamotonga should be getting pick up from the Fu'amotu tower, although it is also right across the bay from the main tower.)

We had problems with one of the mobiles we got not getting a signal, or getting a tower signal but not getting a dial through. We took it to the Tonfon office and the girls were very quick/prompt to replace the phone, and now we have a working phone.

If you're in town, take a look at their phone option.

If I read the cryptic note on their wall, calls are free until the end of the week due to all the problems they are having with connections. I hope they don't have a billing problem too.
